Grooming Tips
Before giving your yorkie a bath I suggest you look through and see if you have any mats to remove. A soft coat will mat much more and is easier cared for in a puppy cut. Remove any mats before you give your baby a bath. This is also a great time to brush your yorkies teeth. Yorkies are prone to excessive tarter. I personally use petzlife gel. I love it, so easy to use. Don't allow any drinking 30 minuits after you brush. Use a tooth brush and paste made for dogs available at all pet stores. Make sure you have the yorkie's teeth checked by a vet @ 6-8 months. Sometimes baby teeth need to be removed.
First check your yorkies ears for any redness, discharge, or offensive smell. If you find any of those please have your vet take a look. If you see hair in th channel pull it with your fingers. A plucking powder will help pull the hair out easier. Pull quickly. Now for the outer ear I use a small clippers. I remove the hair about 1/3 the way down on the back and inside.
Yorkies have hair that grows on their pads and need to be trimmed. I also use the clippers for this. I trim the hair even to the pad so that they have no tangles. Leaving the hair on the pads will cause problems with their ability to walk properly and could become very irritating/painfull. At this time I also trim nails. We use a standard nail clipper (for people) clip them at the hook no further if you cut short. Dog nail clipper will be needed as they age. If this is done with each bath you will only have to take off the tips. They also have nail files you can use to make them round and smooth.
Time for a bath!!
Make sure the coat is all wet. DO NOT rub the coat in circles. Apply your shampoo and run your fingers through to get the dirt out. Make sure you rinse out all the way. Left in shampoo can cause skin problems. Then apply a conditioner, and do the same.
When your ready to take your yorkie out of the bath just wrap him/her in a towel and hold. If you rub, once again you will have problems combing out the coat. I use a stand up dryer you can purchase from petsmart.com. When brushing, never brush a dry coat, spray your brush with Emu Oil spary then brush him/her. Brushing will keep the hair clean, except on the side of the body where urine collects on a male. Wash this area daily with a damp cloth and warm water.
Trimming paws is a bit tricky. I do not use clipper for their paws. I comb the hair from one side to another and trim around in a curve. This way it gets the hair all the way around on the paw. If you are having trouble contact a local groomer and she if they will show you how to do the paws.
Time for a sanitary trim. Grab your clippers and make sure your yorkie has the hair removed from his/her anal area. This way when he/she does their business nothing collects on the hair. Then you have to trim the hair on their private areas. Just leave a little hair so you don't get to close.
This is a great way to freshen up your yorkie babies!!!
