Before bringing home your puppy you should ask your breeder what basic supplies you will need to have to make the puppy feel at home. I always try to make a list for our new Yorkie moms or dads to take with them before their new puppy comes home. Here are a few of those items. Bedding, some type of blanket or bed for your baby to sleep on and feel like she/he has it's own spot to call his/her own. I always send home a blanket with mama's scent to help puppy adjust.
Some people like to crate train their puppy, in this case
purchase a small crate. Just enough room for your yorkie to turn around. At first I always help get them used to a crate by putting them in for only a couple minuites at a time. After a while you can leave them in for a longer period of time.
My favorite pen is a
Iris 8-Panel Indoor/Outdoor Pet Pen I love these because I can make room for their bed on one side, and their food on another. I would lay potty pads down all the way through the pen at first and every week pull 1 pad out. Eventually he/she will learn to only go on the potty pad. This has worked very well for us.
Keep some nutrical on hand for a little booster. It will help with the transition from our home to yours. sometimes these little ones decide not to eat as much through the transition. This will help them. You can get this at Petsmart or Petco stores. Also available in some stores online.
Purchase an identification tag for your new puppy. We dont use collars for our walks since their little necks are so delicate. We do have collars for tags only. It's a good idea to use a harness for your yorkie.
You and your breeder will discuss the type of food that your puppy will be on when they go home. We always send enough food for atleast a week. This way if you decide to use a different food you have enough to mix the food. You can then gradually change over to a different kind of food, by combining the new food with the old food until the puppy adjusts. This will prevent sudden shocks to the puppy's digestive system that could result in diarrhea or other stomach concerns.
You will need to purchase grooming supplies. I love the
Madan brush and combs. They do not rip the hair out and it feels better on their skin. I use Lot's of different shampoos and conditioners. Right now I am using
Barktini, this shampoo is soap and detergent free. It leaves the hair so beautiful. I also use
Emu Oil Spray inbetween baths and after a bath. You will be amazed how easy it is to comb his/her hair after using the Emu Oil spray.
Toys and more toys! All of our yorkies love their toys, especially ones they can fit into their mouths. They will need somthing to chew on as they start to get their adult teeth in and puppy teeth out. We also use
Bully Sticks, they love to chew on their bullies. Always supervise your yorkie when they are chewing bully sticks. The link I provided is to a friend of mine. She always has the best of the best bullies. No smell and has wonderful customer service. We DO NOT let them have any kind of Rawhide. This does not digest in their little tummies well and can cause blockage and other problems. Another treat I like to give is a Kong filled with peanut butter and frozen. I just fill them up freeze them and it will help when they are teething. You can also wet a clean washcloth, put it in the freezer and get it out later for them to chew and play with. Soothing for their little gums. Remember, if the puppy has toys to play with they will be less likely to chew on household items.
You may also wish to purchase a baby gate or two for your home. We never let puppies have free run of the house until they are doing well with potty training. They are also available at Petsmart or Petco.
Food & Water bowls - Dont be suprised if you see him/her taking a bath in their water bowl. I don't know what it is with these babies but all of mine went though that stage. They would put their paws right in. Maybe they were just checking the temperature? :)
If you have any questions please ask your breeder, make sure you have everything you need to bring home your yorkie.
Potty training takes much effort. Feed him/her two to three times a day and take him for regular potty breaks. As he/she potties, speak words out loud that describe what he is doing and that he is doing it well. He/She will soon associate words and praise with the activity and then eagerly go potty when you take him. Earlier i mentioned getting some gates. This will help make sure you can monitor your puppy and he/she can not sneak off and potty somewhere. I have pad trained and outside trained yorkies. I also have that will do both. I thought it would be confusing for them to learn to go both places and they proved me wrong. They are so smart!
